Over half of the inequality in learning outcomes at age 11 can be traced back to the pre-school years

Save the Children

The attainment gap emerges very early – it’s measurable in babies as young as 9 months.

And sadly, evidence shows that children who start school behind very often stay behind. 90% of a person’s brain development happens before their 5th birthday – the first five years of a child’s life are crucially important.

Evidence also shows that the little, everyday things families do together at home – like talking, singing, playing and sharing books together – make a big difference to children’s brain development, and go on to impact their learning and life chances.

That’s why we support parents to do the little things that make a big difference, and provide the best possible start for their children. Because we want every child, no matter where they grow up, to be able to fulfil their potential.

Across the UK and beyond, we train practitioners who work with families – like family support workers and midwives – to deliver our evidence-based programmes. We work to make sure that families have the best support possible.

We also directly support families in some of the least affluent areas of the UK, in our local area of Oxfordshire.

In the past I would not so much talk or read to my daughter because I thought she was too young to understand, but after seeing her response to everything at Peep it has improved my help towards her talking and listening.”

What your support could do:

  • £25 a year pays for a child to have a beautiful, new book delivered through their door every month
  • £300 pays for a parent and their child to attend groups for a year

Investing in early childhood is a downpayment on all of our futures”
Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales

Since I started Peep I talk more with my daughter about what is in the book we are looking at – not just the words.  We sing loads and I am beginning to feel more confident with messy play.”
